Project Overview

Clan Contracting completed critical basement concrete repairs and structural strengthening at the Grade II listed Cunard Building on Liverpool’s waterfront. Following a detailed survey, defects were identified in basement soffits and sub-basement structural elements, including cracking, spalling, and exposed reinforcement.

The deterioration was linked to high carbonation and chloride contamination within the concrete, requiring targeted breakout, repair, and long-term protective measures, alongside structural strengthening using bonded carbon fibre reinforcement.

Scope of Structural Works

  • Survey-led identification of defects to basement soffits, beams, and columns
  • Breakout and removal of cracked and delaminated concrete to sound substrate
  • Protection of exposed reinforcement using Sika MonoTop 610
  • Concrete reinstatement using Sika MonoTop 612, with smoothing using Sika MonoTop 620
  • Structural strengthening using Sika CarboDur CFRP laminates, bonded with Sikadur 30
  • Corrosion inhibition using Sika Ferrogard 903+
  • Anti-carbonation protection using Sikagard 550 W Elastic
